What causes ground-level ozone?

Ground-level ozone, a primary component of smog, is one of the most common air pollutants in the country.  Many sources release the chemicals that form ozone including vehicle exhaust, gasoline and paint fumes, and power plant emissions.  Because more sources exist in urban areas, ozone tends to be worse in large cities. However, ozone is easily carried by wind and can travel great distances, also affecting downwind rural areas.

How does ozone affect health?

Ozone causes breathing difficulties and is particularly harmful to children, people who are active outdoors, and those with breathing ailments such as asthma. Breathing ozone may cause coughing, throat irritation, wheezing, and shortness of breath.   Avoid the health consequences of ozone by reviewing the daily ozone forecast and minimizing heavy outdoor activities on air alert days.
